About the European Patent Office (EPO)
The European Patent Organisation is an intergovernmental organisation set up pursuant to the European Patent Convention (EPC) which entered into force in 1977. At present it has 38 member states (Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom). The European Patent Office is the executive body of the European Patent Organisation. The European Patent Office (EPO) is charged with the searching and examination of European patent applications and the granting of European patents. It employs some 6,850 staff. The EPO headquarters is located in Munich, and the Office also has branches in The Hague/Rijswijk, Berlin, Vienna and Brussels.
Employees of the Office are normally required to be nationals of EPC contracting states. Over 60% have university-level qualifications, generally in science, technology or law. They work in the three official languages of the EPO (English, French and German). Today, 3 800 work at the headquarters in Munich, 2700 in the branch at The Hague, 240 in the Berlin sub-office and 100 in the Vienna sub-office.
