Plumpy’Mum™ is a Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF) also defined as a Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement (LNS Large Quantity)

Plumpy’Mum™ has been especially designed to address suboptimal nutritional status in pregnant and lactating woman.

In developing countries, inadequate maternal nutritional status is considered the main cause for intrauterine growth retardation and subsequent low birth weight. Low birth weight (<2500g) is associated with higher risk of neonatal morbidity and mortality, and irreversible effects on child cognitive and motor development. That is why it is crucial to correct the nutritional status in this target group as early as possible. Numerous recent studies have shown that multiple micronutrients supplementation during pregnancy has positive effects on birth outcomes

Plumpy’Mum™ is distributed ideally in targeted nutritional supplementation programmes alongside other interventions, such as Behavior Change Communication (BCC) activities to improve nutritional practises as well as obstetric care.

To improve maternal nutritional status, birth outcomes and postanatal growth

Plumpy’Mum™ provides a combination of multiple micronutrients as well as a good energy-protein balance, with the aim of having a positive effect on maternal nutritional status, birth outcomes and postnatal growth.

This product has been designed based on the findings from a prenatal food supplementation study carried out in rural Burkina Faso that showed improved birth outcomes after prenatal supplementation, especially in underweight or anemic women.
