Research on biogas technology improvement and effective biogas utilization by value chain

Objective and Purpose of the Assignment

Overall research objective

The research objective is to support to adding value to livestock waste management and GHG emission reduction through improved biogas technology.

Specific objectives

(i) To test and promote improved biodigestor technologies by:
(a) Reviewing and assessing technology from within Viet Nam and internationally. Based on the review develop design specifications for the development of new technology, new digesters or new biogas processes.
(b) The design of new biogas digesters able to expand biogas production to meet demand growth from the growth in pig numbers within a farm through local design modification, fabrication and/or importation.
(c) Identifying improved technology and designs for small, medium and large scale biogas plants that respond to the identified needs in selected LCASP province and the promotion of these technologies with existing manufacturers and importers.

(ii) To conduct research on biogas fueled power generators by:
(a) Conducting a review of available international technology for biogas powered generation of electricity across a range of scales
(b) Assessing the operational and cost effectiveness of such technology
(c) Provide prototype designs and cost estimates
(d) Based on respective costs either import or manufacture of prototypes design and test under both laboratory and field conditions

(iii) To review available filtering technology to remove H2S and excess water vapor from biogas by:
(a) Conducting an international review of biogas filter technology
(b) Assessing by differing types of filter technology their effectiveness and appropriateness for Viet Nam Biogas sector
(c) Design and manufacture biogas filters at a range of sizes to fit scale of biogas output (for differing sizes of digesters) and power generators
(d) Integrate proposed filter technology with power generator technology being manufactured and with existing power generator technology operating in Viet Nam.
(iv) Using the output from (i) (ii) and (iii) above establish pilots technology including
(a) New design of biogas plant at small, medium and large scale;
(b) Power generators using biogas;
(c) Biogas vapor and H2S filtering systems integrated with the above technology and with existing systems
(d) For the integration of new biodigester, power generators and filtering system that are
customized for the identified farming systems.

(v) Prepare a policy review of the biogas sector and propose
(a) policy objectives for the sector
(b) policy options for achieving these objectives, and
(c) specify policy directives to achieve the agreed objectives
