Supply of Poshomills, Dosifiers and Solar Panels

World Food Programme (WFP) has been implementing a project on local processing of food for school meals programmes and household consumption by supporting small scale millers in Turkana County since 2014. This involved milling and fortification of locally produced grains grown in Turkana or elsewhere in Kenya purchased from smallholders, processed by refugees and the host community to support the school meals programme and stimulate farming and local economic growth. WFP works in close consultation with the Ministry of Public Health and Kenya Bureau of Standards to comply with national quality assurance checks of fortified foods and build capacity to ease future engagement and regulation at the small-scale miller level. The project established that local processing of food for school meals is viable and offers local economic opportunities for both refugees and host communities; small-scale millers can successfully fortify flour to meet national quality-assurance levels.

WFP is expanding this to other counties that have committed to support small scale milling and fortification of food for their school meals programme. In this regard, WFP’s resilient livelihood, and nutrition (RLN) unit plans to purchase two posho mills, two micronutrient dosifiers and two solar panels for the dosifiers for Wajir and Marsabit Counties. This intervention allows WFP to support county government plans (County Integrated Development Plans- CIDPs) and strategies in line with WFP’s Country Strategic Plan (2018 – 2023).
