    Item Description:

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations based in Rome, Italy, hereby solicits proposals for the Provision of Nutrition-Sensitive Value Chain (NSVC) Analyses in Indonesia.

IFAD was established as an international financial institution (IFI) in 1977 to finance agricultural development projects primarily for food production in the developing countries. IFAD’s mission is to enable poor rural people to overcome poverty and is dedicated to eradicating rural poverty in developing countries.

IFAD finances many projects that develop smallholder value chains (VCs). Their main objective is to increase income through more productive links of smallholders with markets. IFAD is now looking at how to make these value chains also work to improve nutrition, principally through improvement in diet quality. Essentially, this means developing value chains for nutritious foods (crops, livestock or small animals, or fish) in ways that contribute to raising incomes of project beneficiaries (smallholder farmers), but that also improve their nutrition.

Following on the initial commodity selection undertaken in Maluku and North Maluku (nutrition assessment and commodity selection), this consultancy assignment will carry out more in-depth analyses for a subset of commodities (or closely related commodity groups) identified in that study as having potential for improving nutrition as well as meeting the criteria of generating income and responding to potential market demand.
