Item Description:
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (“the Global Fund”) was created to dramatically increase resources to fight three of the world’s most devastating diseases (AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria), and to direct those resources to areas of greatest need. As a partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected communities, the Global Fund represents an innovative approach to international health financing.
The Global Fund works in close collaboration with other bilateral and multilateral organizations to supplement existing efforts dealing with the three diseases. The Global Fund achieves its objectives by raising funds from donors (governments and private) which are then provided as grant funds to suitable Principal Recipients (generally governments, civil society organisations, etc.) for the implementation of activities (procurement of life- saving drugs, prevention, care and support activities, and other supporting interventions) to reduce the burden of the three diseases. The Global Fund disburses over USD 4 billion a year in grants to about 140 countries. The Global Fund then tracks the flow of funds from these grants down to the implementer level. It also produces reports regarding its funding activities, program performance and impact to relevant stakeholders.
The Global Fund’s Secretariat, based in Geneva, is responsible for day-to-day operations, including mobilizing resources from the public and private sectors, managing grants, providing financial, procurement, legal and administrative support, as well as reporting information on the Global Fund’s activities, program performance to the Board and the public.
