Item Description:
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP) in Uganda have come together and propose to build a new office which will serve both agencies and provide modern and secure facilities for the present time. The offices will accommodate about 350 staff and have a floor area of approximately 4,300 square meters. An Architectural & Engineering company are engaged to do the Design. Tender documents should be ready by March 2012. Construction is planned to start in June 2022.
The site for the office complex will be in Mbuya, on the outskirts of Kampala. It is a sloping site with views of the city in the south west and as far as Murchison bay on the edge of Lake Victoria to the south east. It is a suburban area and the 1-hectare site has greenery and mature trees at present. The Designers hope to retain as much of its character as possible. The buildings must be as secure as practicable as possible, and the layout and design is been developed with this in mind.
At the same time the two UN agencies have a duty to ensure that the best practical steps are taken to ensure a low carbon footprint. It must be built to reach high ‘greening’ standards and qualify for EDGE certification.
The proposed design envisages 2 partially separate blocks, of similar size, one for each agency, and a central entrance and common area block for utilities, meeting rooms and other common spaces. Each block is expected to be 4 stories high. There will be a Conference Room separate from the main structure. We envision that there will be a secure boundary wall within the plot with a significant proportion of parking spaces outside the wall and most visitors passing through a security post before arriving on foot.
The successful company will have the opportunity to build this high-profile building complex which will serve as an example of good practice in design and sustainability for both them and the 2 UN agencies.
The works will include:
- Construction of the building with a floor area of approximately 4,000 – 6,000 square meters
- Civil works for drainage, improved access road, parking, driveways.
- Secure Boundary wall
- Landscaping works
- Interior fit out works
- Specialist installations for offices including Fire Prevention and Control, CCTV security, Access control, Internet cabling for Voice & Data and standard office electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
