Item Description:
The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) was established under Regulation (EC) No 1406/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council for the purpose of ensuring a high, uniform and effective level of maritime safety, as amended. Among its tasks, the Agency operates critical European maritime applications (in particular the SafeSeaNet system, the European Long-Range Identification and Tracking Data Centre, the LRIT International Data Exchange and the Earth Observation Data Centre). It also provides operational support to EU Member States through oil pollution response vessels, satellite imagery and expertise in case of major oil pollution at sea or a significant maritime accident.
EMSA Maritime Support Services (MSS) has been operational since 2009 in a dedicated centre at EMSA premises in Lisbon. It supports the round-the-clock performance and administration of critical maritime applications together with a 24/7 helpdesk. The MSS is also the permanent single point of contact for Member States and EU institutions, including the Commission, with respect to requests for the Agency’s operational assistance (spill response vessels, satellite imagery and expertise) and for information regarding ships and incidents.
Given the MSS’s crucial role in monitoring the above applications and services, EMSA purchased in 2013 a videowall that allows for the permanent display of the application dashboards, maritime incidents and information on a 24/7 basis. The MSS is also the place where EMSA visitors are briefed on the services provided to the EU maritime community. The videowall supports these presentations.
